A sand filter cartridge can trap dirt and debris that are 40 microns in size and larger, smaller amounts of dirt will simply just pass through and return to your pool water. Pool filters that produce much the same quality of water as sand filters are those of cartridge filters. Pool water passes through a paper-type media that is used to trap dirt and debris, once again, only dirt that is 40 microns in size or larger will be filtered through. The advantage of these pool cartridge filters is that they require little maintenance, they probably only require attention once or twice a year. A final type of filtration system that is available is that of the DE filter. This filter utilizes diatomaceous earth as its filtration media and it has the ability to filter very finely, in fact, dirt and debris as small as 5 microns in size remain behind and do not enter back into the water, a definite plus when residing in tropical climates.
