Swimming Pools
Swimming pools have been used for centuries for a variety of purposes and up to date is still the one main recreational activity enjoyed by all. A swimming pool is defined as an artificial body of water that is enclosed within a shell. Today, this ‘shell’ of swimming pools is found in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, swimming pools can fit anywhere where one has a free and open space. The ‘elite’ used swimming pools centuries ago and it was recognized as a status symbol, today, private homeowners, schools, public parks etc enjoy utilizing swimming pools.
Swimming pools recreational activities include playing in the water with tubes, swimming around splashing each other or just simply cooling off on a hot summer’s day. There is however, a more serious side to the purpose of swimming pools. Swimming is regarded as an international Olympic sport and many people engage in swimming competitions on a full-time basis. Swimming pools are also used for the training of deep-sea divers so that they can learn how to use their equipment underneath water and learn all the techniques required before attempting taking their skills into the open water.
Water in swimming pools needs maintenance. Still water builds algae and bacteria and can be extremely dangerous if not taken care of. To eliminate this problem, a sanitizer known as chlorine is used in pools to keep the water clean and sterilized. Through evolving technology, chlorine is found in many different forms. Generally, it consists of a powdery substance but these days some persons purchase other forms of devices that remain in the pool for consecutive periods that slowly release chlorine into the water. Choice of chlorine ultimately depends on how much a person is willing to spend.
Various types of swimming pools are found and selection would mostly depend on what it is you are looking for, for example, do you want a pool for play or serious activity? How much you are willing to spend? One can distinguish between two types of swimming pools, namely, above ground swimming pools or below ground swimming pools. Above ground swimming pools are smaller pools and are generally used for recreational activities and for a quick way to cool off in the summer. Above ground swimming pools are made of either plastic or metal, the latter being the more expensive yet more durable one. Below ground swimming pools are usually made from either fiberglass or they are reinforced with concrete and lined with a special plaster. Fiberglass looks great but after a few years of wear and tear, the fiberglass may crack which can easily result in injuries. Swimming pools can be constructed indoors or outside and if one is willing to spend extra, they can even contain artificial heating for the winter months.
